So, let us suppose that things go a little more smoothly in the First Conference (perhaps, if we want to get ambitious, Garfield isn't assassinated, and he champions the idea, allowing the conference to occur earlier), and the US is able to interest several of the other countries in the Americas into joining this proposed Customs Union. Just spitballing, but lets say at least the US, Canada, Mexico, the Central American states, and maybe Brazil join the Customs Union initially. The nice thing about Customs Unions, of course, is that they can snowball, so other countries could join afterward. Let us assume they do over the following decades.
So how might the economy of the Western Hemisphere develop and how might it impact various political developments?
