The Peace of Madness: An in-progress HOI2 mod

IMAGINE, IF YOU DARE, A WORLD FRAUGHT WITH PERIL...
A WORLD WHERE H.P. LOVECRAFT HAS GONE MAD! MAD WITH POWER!
A WORLD WHERE FRANCE KICKED GERMANY HARD IN THE BALLS AND NEVER STOPPED KICKING!

A WORLD WHERE I SLAP SHIT IN WHENEVER JUST BECAUSE!
THAT WORLD IS THE WORLD OF...

So yeah, I said a while ago that I'd start posting AAR-like whatsits as I work on this mod. Figured that it was about time to post some of that. This first entry is just a little stuff about the beginning of the game and stuff I've fiddled around with a bit, mostly focusing on the USA.

I want to say, first off, that the graphics side of this has been a blast:

mad003.png

...obviously it isn't the gaudiest of things (and that scenario button certainly isn't going to win any awards), but I made it and I'm damn proud of it. There's a certain roughness to it all that I hope to iron out over time, but for now I'm happy to just get something done. The flags, for example, come in a variety of different styles at the moment, mostly because I pinched some of them from Victoria, some of them from Paradoxplaza's Graphics Request thread (they said I could use any of 'em!) and some of them were made from years-old slapshod programs.

Like I said, I'm just doing a brush-over of the USA at the start in this first entry. This USA is slightly different from the usual...

mad004.png

mad005.png

mad006.png

...did you know that, historically, the US occupied Haiti from 1915 to 1934? It's true! It's so easy to extend that just a bit, especially given the government this USA has:

mad007.png

(Robert Bloch, the minister of security, is a Prince of Terror. Historically, he once joked that he had "the heart of a little boy"-- "I keep it in a jar on my desk". Had to milk that gag.)

This dark and twisted USA is the leader of the "Outer Axis", an alliance of fascist dickholes which at this point really only include the US itself and its totally-not-colonies-at-all Liberia and the Philippines. More will join as time goes on! The stars have foretold.

The Outer Axis' two main competitors are the France-led "Elder Allies", being the remains of the Great War's anti-German coalition, and the "Great Red Ones" (or "Red Ones" when I get around to changing the text file again), a socialist alliance led by the somewhat-unstable Great Britain, which had Communists rise up in the '20s and seize the reins of government, but forgot to overthrow the King while they were at it. Whoops. At least the Brits tried to undo a bit of colonialism with a program of "devolution", but that just resulted in half the former colonies and dominions splitting away as soon as they could. Well, honestly, that's mostly because I wanted more gameplay in Africa and figured that more independent African countries would help do that.

mad013.png

mad014.png

I gave this USA the starting techs Germany has in vanilla HOI2 (why not?), but I didn't give them quite the same quality tech teams. :/

mad008.png

Other than that, I can assure you I changed practically nothing about the USA...

mad012.png

And so, on to actual gameplay... tomorrow. Bwahahahahaa!

Does the game end when the Great Old Ones return? :D
I did replace the Aliens, so if you use that "Roswell" cheat a great horde of horrors will spill forth, rather than little green men.
Unpatched? Not even 1.2?
Actually it is patched, I think-- I just ended up poking at the wrong file somehow. I think, I'm not certain.

:/ That don't make sense... where did I copy this latest version of the mod to? Gah...

Well, actually, IIRC it does make sense, sort-off... that is, IIRC the bit that says 'This is 1.X!' is in one of the config files, so all you'd have to do to make it wrong is to have used the 1.0 version of that file when you edited... something else in that file... when making the mod.

Aha, fixed it! Now it shows the proper steam version.

So I decided to play the US through to the invasion of Mexico, moving the date of the invasion event ahead 2 years because I'm an impatient son of a bitch and there's not much else in the happening in the game, yet. (Except for some key events I forgot I had written in...)

Anyways, I started off by leaving the already under-construction naval units be and adding two cavalry units and a miltia to the production queue.

mad001.png

I also began some basic research...

mad002.png

...and full speed ahead! A couple events popped up now and then-- for instance, when George V dies, the Brits have the chance to seize the moment and complete the revolution, or they can let Eddy have the throne and continue the awkward relationship between monarch and laborer. In this case, anti-monarchist revolutionaries won out.

mad003.png

In other foreign events, the Kuomintang in China beat the militarist Anhui clique, giving them a border with their up-until-then northern Guominjun allies, and prompted them to force their northern allies to decide between being fully absorbed into the Kuomintang apparatus, striking out on their own as another Chinese clique, or joining the Communists and starting a shitstorm. The Ottomans, meanwhile, suppressed another Arab revolt, and a creepy island was found by the crew of a New Zealand ship in the South Pacific...

mad004.png

mad006.png

mad007.png

The first of several errors popped up at this point-- the Roma events are not supposed to all fire at the same time. Must've done something differently for India, though, 'cos their Roma event fired separately from all the others.

mad008.png

mad009.png

Meanwhile I got bored of waiting for the Mexican invasion events to kick off, so I decided to put a bunch of ships in the queue and try to build up an even bigger navy for shits and grins.

mad011.png

FINALLY

mad012.png

mad013.png

But I probably should've waited longer and not have pushed the invasion events so early, because one of several Mexican Civil War events started while I was invading. Need to fix that.

Need to fix this, too-- somehow I gave the US a copy of the Italian Roma event? :confused: That needs to be cleared up.

mad015.png

And yet another bug-- when the Mexican surrender events fired, they also partially fired for the US, so I ended up with a snootload of dissent. After taking the Guatemalan decision and getting them as an ally, I decided that was enough bugs and errors for one session and ended the game.

Event coding is a (necessary) pain in the ass. :(

I may have to demand you post a proper version of the image used as the backdrop for the first America screenshot with the skeletal Statue of Liberty...

Also, how about a different flag for your radical Britain?

Give me a little bit, that's saved on my main computer back in the dorms... it's from a WWII Italian propaganda poster. American promises of freedom and liberty are just a screen for death and destruction, something like that.

Ha! That was awesome! It was all like "Rahh! Urgg! Booo!". And I was like "Cool! Awesome! Scintillating!"

That sentence explains everything that I felt while reading.

Very odd; this event doesn't seem to fire in-game (using the "dissent" cheat to quickly get 25%). Any idea why?
Code:
#########################################################################
#  Vermont gives up
#########################################################################
event = {
    id = 942000
    random = no
    country = USA

    trigger = {
        government = fascist
        dissent = 10

    }

    name = "Vermont seccession!"
    desc = "A group of subversives within Vermont, claiming the use of a fictional 'escape clause' that does not exist, have declared the independence of a new 'Vermont Republic' and have called on the people of Vermont to rise up."
    style = 0
    picture = "coup"

    date = { day = 1 month = january year = 1936 }
    offset = 3
    deathdate = { day = 30 month = december year = 1960 }

    action_a = {
        name = "Kill them all!" # Then it is War
        command = { type = removecore which = 594 }
        command = { type = removecore which = 597 }
        command = { type = independence which = U45 value = 1 }
        command = { type = end_mastery which = U45 }
        command = { type = dissent value = 5 }
    }
}

I must say, your ideas intrigue me. How much is from New Nations (I ask, as it might... affect conversion)?
Heavens, forgot to answer this. I used New Nations as a base, but I wholly changed:
  • YUG (from Yugoslavia to South German Federation)
  • ALI (Aliens to Eldritch Horrors)
  • U12 (Formosa to Anhui Clique)
  • U22 (Silesia to Hanover)
  • U26 (blank tag to Socialist Austria)
  • U35 (Karelia to Hyderabad)
  • U41 (Kiribati to Danzig)
  • U48 (Scania to Navajo Nation)
  • U49 (Aland to Assam)
  • U50 (Indian Ocean Federation to Hesse)
  • U61 (Vojvodina to Wurttemberg-Baden)
  • U65 (Springfield to Baroda-Bombay Union)
  • U66 (Intermountain Federation to People's Collective)
  • U67 (Great Lakes Republic to Arixo [Arizona-New Mexico])
  • U71 (Northern Ireland to Mysore)
  • U87 (China-Nanking to Hedjaz)
  • U91 (Kuwait to Rajputana Agency)
  • U98 (Trinidad and Tobago to Romani Union)
And those are just the ones I consider full conversions-- U40, for example, went from being Transcaucasia to the Mountain Republic, but there was enough overlap between the two that not much needed tweaking aside from some ministers. There's also the obvious stuff like USA (chok full of fascists and science fiction writers now), USN (from being a combo of USA, CAN and ENG ministers to being SL/ML USA Ministers and mobsters), ENG (full of commie pinkos now), RSI (from all fascists to all communists), SAF (communist ministers now), CHI (altered KMT), U74 ("Northern China" to "Beiyang Clique") and so on.

...How about another list for just-altered-but-not-wholly-changed?
  • USA (fascist)
  • ENG (communist)
  • FRA (minister changes, generally more democratic)
  • SOV (Trotsky, not Stalin)
  • RUS (minister changes, generally more democratic)
  • CHI (minister changes, no Chiang Kai-Shek, "Nationalist China" to "Kuomintang")
  • MEX (minister changes)
  • SAF ("South Africa" to "Rand Republic", more communist)
  • EGY (minister changes, generally more communist, cores change)
  • IND (minister changes, generally more British ministers, cores change)
  • CAN (minister changes, generally fewer British ministers)
  • AST (minister changes, generally more communist)
  • USN (cores change to just US east of the Mississippi, ministers range from SD to PA)
  • CAL (ministers changes, generally more Hollywood personalities, cores change)
  • CHC (ministers changes, no Mao)
  • CRO (ministers changes)
  • SAU ("Saudi Arabia" to "Saudi Nejd", flag change, cores change)
  • OTT (minister changes, skin added, cores change)
  • GER (minister changes, generally more democratic)
  • AUS (minister changes)
  • MAN ("Manchukuo" to "Fengtien Clique", minister changes)
  • SAR (minister changes, flag changed)
  • SYR (minister changes, generally more communist, cores change)
  • TAN ("Tannu Tuva" to "Buryat-Mongolia", minister changes, cores change)
  • AZB ("Azerbaijan" to "Centrocaspiy", minister changes, cores change)
  • KAZ ("Kazakhstan" to "Qazaq Republic", minister changes, cores change)
  • TAJ ("Tajikistan" to "Bukhara", minister changes, cores change)
  • TRK ("Turkmenistan" to "Khiva", minister changes, cores change)
  • UKR (minister changes, cores change)
  • UZB ("Uzbekistan" to "Basmachi Turkestan", minister changes, cores change)
  • ARA (ministers change, generally more communist, cores change)
  • CGX ("Guangxi Clique" to "Bingguo China", minister changes, generally more fascist, cores change)
  • CSX ("Xibei San Ma" to "Guominjun Clique", minister changes, cores change)
  • MEN ("Mengkukuo" to "Mengjiang", minister changes, cores change)
  • RSI ("Italian Social Republic" to "Italia Populare", minister changes, completely communist)
  • U10 (New England; Ghost of H.P. Lovecraft is now NS head of state)
  • U18 (Saxony; minister changes)
  • U19 (Bavaria; minister changes, cores change)
  • U23 (Crimea; minister changes)
  • U25 (Tartarstan; minister changes, flag change, core changes)
  • U40 ("Transcaucasia" to "Mountain Republic", minister changes, core changes)
  • U52 ("United Baltic Duchy" to "Courland-Semigallia", minister changes, core changes)
  • U56 (Bengal; minister changes, core changes)
  • U74 ("North China" to "Beiyang Clique", minister changes, core changes)
  • UCH ("Republic of China" to "Royal China", minister changes, core changes)
I think that's all of it.

I like the Crimson Skies references. I made a CS themed mod for Victoria II, mainly to enable a conquering nation to break up the US into smaller, non-threatening lumps, but also because I love Crimson Skies :) Funnily enough I also had New England (or the Atlantic Coalition as it is now) as a Lovecraftian State. Great minds think alike eh?
