I'm just wondering how plausible it might have been, in the event of the UK declining to enter the EEC (or being barred from doing so, as it had been at an earlier stage), for a Commonwealth Free Trade Zone to have been established. Would it have been possible? If so, what would the maximum levels of co-operation, integration, and freedom of movement across the Commonwealth have been? If such a Free Trade Zone had been established, which intergovernmental politico-economic union would have had the potential to be more powerful and influential- that of the EU sans the UK, or that of the Commonwealth? And would a Commonwealth Free Trade Zone have been more or less stable than the EU in such a scenario?
