Eternal City timeline

Author's note: Hey look, a timeline that's not finished!
----------------------------------------------------
500 AD

So this is an alternate timeline where the Eastern Roman Empire fell instead of the Western Roman Empire. Essentially the Huns swoop down into the Eastern Roman Empire causing all sorts of damage down there, and then various Germanic Tribes swoop down following the Huns; The Goths, Vandals, Sciri, Macromans, and Lombards. While the Huns never took Constantinople, the Sciri were, making it the capital of their kingdom. Meanwhile the Sassanians were able to take the Levant and made the Goths into tributaries (although not quite out right vassals) of their Empire. Western Rome swooped in and took Egypt back.

The Germans ending so far south and East has caused a split between Northwestern and Southeastern Germans, forming Three Germanic groups: Northern Germans (the Nords), Central or Western Germans (Saxons, Franks, and Angles) and the Southern Germans (All those grouped around the ERE). Dividing the Northwestern and Southern Germans are the Slavs, who make it all the way to the Rhine, although notably never headed to Yugoslavia

In Rome itself, the Empire is slowly decentralizing. The Augustus, the Emperor and highest man in Rome, slowly lost power to the Caesars, the Governors of Gaul, Iberia, Carthage, Egypt, and Illyria (The Augustus of Rome was also the Caesar of Italy)

I should also mention the evolution of Christianity: In OTL the Catholic Church was centralized and independent while the Orthodox Church was decentralized and subject to Caesaropapism, Emperor over the Church. ITTL, the Catholic Church is still centralized but subject to Caesaropapism, where the Augustus is able to chose the Pope, who was able to unite the Empire religiously, outside of Egypt where the Patriarch of Alexandria was still able to rule religiously. Thus, the Caesardom (Governance) of Egypt was exempt from being Catholic, although the Augustus and Pope both want to change this eventually. Catholicism is more or less limited to the Roman Empire.

In the East, the Orthodox church is odd, and differs from state to state, but the 'true' Patriarchs, those of Constantinople and Antioch are more or less independent from the German Kings. The German Kings in turn try to set up official religious heads in their own kingdoms, but this has failed spectacularly in the Gothic, Sciri and Vandal states (most notably the Northern Gothic King also tried to declared himself as Patriarch of his realm, but the people still instead go under the religious following of either the Patriarch of Constantinople or the Patriarch of Antioch). In the Macromanni and Lombard kingdoms the setting up of their own Patriarchs tied not to the Kingdom but rather to the Pentarchy which did succeed. So the 'true' Orthodoxy Churches are independent and well followed, while the secular/nonindependent Orthodox churches aren't really followed.

750

250 years since the first part, and we see the rise of an empire to Rival and even to better Rome: The Arabs. They first invaded Persian Palestine in 631, quickly taking it over, and by 650 they had take Mesopotamia and even Persia. It was then that they turned west, and in 662, they invaded Roman Egypt. The Arabs took over Egypt and Libya easily within 10 years, but they've received heavy resistance in Carthage and Mauritania. Three cities of interest have been under Arab siege since the 680's, known as the Mauritanian states. Carthage and Mauritania proper. Certainly, these two states will be at constant war with each other for some time. As the war in Mauritania started to come to a standstill, the Arabs invaded the Gothic States of Anatolia. These two kingdoms currently act as buffer between the great Marcoman Empire and the Arabian Empire.

In the Balkan and Greater Greek region, we've seen a Roman attempt to recapture Greece. It did work, taking the Vandal Mainland, leaving them with a couple of islands. The Romans even started an invasion of the Scirians, but that was quickly lost as the Marcomans invaded both in their attempt to expand. They took all of Roman Greece outside of Achaia, which acts as de facto Marcoman while de jure Roman. The Marcomans were also able to take the Sciri territory, thus leading to tense standoff between Arabs and Macromans over influence over the Goths.

Over in Britain, after the failure of Rome to retake Greece, they started an invasion to expand the old Caesardom of Britain. This ended in colossal failure as Roman troops and supplies had to be pulled to fight the Arabs in Mauritania. The Saxons were able to remove the last of Roman presence in Britain, and the Germanic influence is growing.

In Slavia, the Avars have broken out of Sarmatia and ended up in the Pannonian Basin. The Croats had to flee from the Avars, and left them to invade and conquer what was remaining of Roman Illyria. The Sorbs and Wends also had to move, taking some of the Danish and Frankish territory.

850

In the last 100 years, we've seen the fall of two great empires dividing into 3 parts each, and the rise of new kingdoms among the Slavs, Germans, and Celts.

In Britain, there is the rise of the Christianize Caledonians in southern Scotland, rising to match the power of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms to the south. In Arabia, there was and still is a war between three Caliphs: The Old Sunni Caliph who's fled to Tunis, the New Sunni Caliph with his capital in Baghdad, and the Shia Caliph in Alexandria. This war of Three Caliphs had allowed the further rise of the Marcomans.

In 789, the Marcoman King marched and made the Gothic-Asian Kings his vassals, and warred with the Arabs, taking back most of Gothica. He was crowned Emperor of the East in 795 in Constantinople, but upon his death ten years later, his empire was divided among his sons into Dacia, Macedonia, and Asia, where their shared capital is supposed to be Constantinople. There is a clear Emperor, that of Macedonia, but he can't gain influence over his two stubborn brothers.

North of Marcomannia the Horde of the Bulgars has conquered the Lombards and is setting in. Just behind them is the Horde of the Magars, and who knows who's behind them. South of the Magars, in Taurica, the Goths of Taurica have resurrected their power, but who know's for how long.

In Slavia, there are four emerging kingdoms, three of which have recently converted to Christianity: The Checs, the Sorvs, and the Croats, the Croats being the strongest of the Three and even conquered parts of Rome. But there is a fourth, still pagan further north, some say their power is greater than even the Croats. Most call it the 'Barbarous Kingdom,' although it's true name is the Kingdom of the Vends.

Speaking of Barbarous Kingdoms, further to the North, beyond the Vends, is an emerging, sea-faring people (Hell, the Romans even call them 'the Sailors'). These people have started raids across Europe, one even raiding as far south as the Lusitanian Coast. There is some fear that eventually they'll come after the Eternal City of Rome.

Religiously, it has been solidified that just about every Christian state now has their own church under the power of a local Archbishop. There are a couple of exceptions though: The Celtic Eblans and Britons each share a common Archbishop, and the Pentarchy (outside of Rome, so really Tetrarchy) remains more-or-less independent.

950

Another 100 years, and the world seems to be falling apart, or at least in some areas.

In Britain, the last of the Pagan Celtic tribes, the Picti, have finally converted to Christianity. Unfortunately, the Germanic-Pagan Nautae under Evarrid have landed in northern Caledonia, and Evarrid looks to found his own kingdom. In the Nautae homeland, kingdoms of all sorts are emerging: The Sueds, the Rans, the Rugs, all creating their own kingdoms and expanding. But it was only thanks to the Nautae that the Romans have come into contact with the Finni, Balti, and Aesyli, people that live beyond even the Nautae and Aerri.

Further south, in Slavia, the Magars invaded the land of the Aerri, setting up a Magar kingdom north of the Carpathians, and the Vends, the 'Barbarous Kingdom,' are expanding more and more. Trying to flee from the Magars and Vends, the Franci and Checi invade into the Roman Empire.

The Croati themselves are invading Padia not just for the gold and glory, but their is a new power in the Pannonian basin: The Bulgari have invaded and united with the Avars, creating an Avari-Bulgari Kingdom (sometimes called Abulgaria). And filling the void left by the Magari and Bulgari are the Pesenegi and Kumani. When will the endless train of Eastern Huns finally end? When will they finally leave Europe alone?

In Marcomannia, the Romans have recognized the Marco-Macedonian King as the Eastern Roman Emperor, the first time they've recognized an Eastern Emperor in 500 years. In Arabia, the Muslim Kingdoms are falling ever faster, as the Caliphs can't hold on to power. As such, a new empire is born, and another is reborn: Enter the Glorious Empire of Armenia and the Return of the Persian Empire. Hopefully, the Most Christian States of Asia and Armenia can hold the line against the Muslims.

Raids are becoming ever more present into the Roman Empire. The Nautae have been more and more frequently been attacking the coasts of Gallia and Hispania, while the Mauretanians have been raiding southern Italy and the Mediterranean, and have even taken Sardinia. Because of the attacks on all sides, the Roman Capital had to be moved to Aquae Sextiae. The Caesars are becoming more and more independent of the Augustus and have even forced the Augustus to give up his role as Caesar of Italia.

1100

Many things happened in the last 150 years, but the biggest event was just the complete shattering of the Western Roman Empire. We'll get to that.

The first major event was in 968 with the conversion of the Barbarous Kingdom of the Vends to Christianity. In 968, the King of the Vends Boguslav declared his conversion to Christianity, and by the end of that year, the Priest that had converted him, Saint John of Grenoble (Swiety Jan), had crowned Boguslav with three titles: The Christian Kingdom of Vendia (Essentially replacing the old title of King of the Vends), but also King of the Slavs and King of Germania. Right now, King of the Slavs and Germania are just titular, but this will change in the near future. They're still harassing the Franks and Slofacs, don't worry

While the Conversion of the Barbarous Kingdom of the Vends is the greatest and first victory, it wasn't the only one: After the Conversion of the Barbarous Kingdom, the North Germans (including the ones that invaded northern Gallia) converted, and even the Arrs and Abulgars (although not quite the Magars or Rutens).

Thanks to conversion of the Nautae, better maps of the Baltic have come to the Romans (or the remains). Eventually, in 1072 a Roman-Remainder explorer headed off to the East Baltics, meeting and recording the Prusi, the Littui, the Latti (Latias and Latios anyone?), and the Asyli

In Britain, the Saxons have united and threaten the independence of Anglia, and possibly even the entirety of Britain. But, Caledonia shall defend in the defense of the Independence of the Angles

In the East, it seems the endless amount of Nomadic Hordes have finally halted their endless attack on Europe. Instead, they have gone for Persia, Armenia, Iberia, and Marcomanni Asia. This has led to direct conflict with the Marcomanni Empire.

Now, finally, for the main event, the Shattering of Rome:
In 998, the Abulgari invaded and conquered Vercroatia (True Croatia), and the Croats in retaliation conquered Ravenna. This was the final straw. The Governors declared war on the Augustus, each declaring that they should be the new Augustus... 100 years later, and the conflict still hasn't stopped: The Belgians, the Etalians, the Ligeirians, the Lusitanians, they're fighting each other to the death, each calling themselves "True Rome," including Narbonesis (which is arguably the Truest Rome besides Rome itself, and in this case, actually labeled True Rome in their Latin Dialect). Because of all of this, the Latin language has shattered and a dark age has begun in the West ('bout time). This is the dark age of the Romans, and the Golden Age of the Slavs is beginning

1200

The Wars of the Roman Reunification continue, but the central events stay outside of former Rome: The founding of the Slavic Empire, the founding the Baltic Missionary Colonies (sometimes called the "Colonias Avas"), the fall of the Turkish Empire and the rise of the Tunisian.

The once Barbarous Kingdom of the Vends had been crowned with three crowns two and a half centuries ago, given three crowns: The King of Vendia, the King of the Slavs, and King of Germania. They have finally decided to take the last two crowns to their advantage and went to war with the Sorbia, unifying it and elevating the title of King of the Slavs to Emperor of the Slavs. They also invaded Francia north of the Rhine in the name of the Kingdom of Germania.

In the Baltic, Roman Missionary refugees fled and set up two colonies, Dagava and Nava after the local rivers. Who knows what the affects of this will be, but their efforts to convert the natives is very minimal so far.

The Turkish Empire, during a long war with the Roman Empire, started to collapse. The Christian Armenians and Iberians split off, and the Persians overthrew them, leaving the Turks to just ruling in East Anatolia. Their war was successful, but very minimally so.

The Tunisian Empire is on the rise. First dividing Mauritania, then fully conquering Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, then taking the Mallorca from Taraconesis. They have the largest army in North Africa, and the largest fleet in the Mediterranean. Truly a threat to the world, and they currently have its eyes of Alexandria and, more importantly, Rome.

1300

Europe, the Continent of Empires. On or just outside of Europe sits so many empires that carry the title of Emperor or it's equivalent: Tunis, Vairoma, Croatia, Slavia, Iberia, Marcoman Empire, Ilkhanate, Mongol Khaganate, Ruthenia, and Littuia.

The first major event of the era was the rise of the Mongol Empire. In 1209, the Mongol Horde rode over the Empire of Persia, then over the Pontic Steppes. After that, they went after the Levant, leaving Egypt reeling, then going after Turkia. After conquering the Turks, they kept riding into the Marcomanni empire in 1221. 50,000 Mongol calvary rode in Marcomanni Anatolia, marching towards Constantinople. Every soldier in the Marcomanni empire was told to gather before Constantinople. When the Mongols approached the Rich River (Bosporus), 30,000 troops had gathered. At the battle of the Reichfluz, the Marcoman empire lost 20,000 men, but also killed 35,000 Mongol troops as they crashed into Marcomanni pikes. On the other side of the Rich River, 20,000 further men were preparing to reinforce the victors. This forced the Mongols to flee, the first victory against them.

The approach of the Mongols also saw the fall of Ruthenia, with Mongols, Magars, Littui, even the Asyli invaded to expand their realms.

Just outside of Ruthenia, on the Baltic coast, Colonies were created and Colonies expanded. The Roman Colonies of Nava and Dagava have expanded to be small kingdoms in their own right, and Sweden and Scania have come to conquer the Asyli and Balts to try to convert them. In response, the Kingdom of Littuia expanded and has now proclaimed themselves Emperor-Guardian of the Baltic people. Similarly, the Esti people have created the twin kingdoms of Estia and Novovileki in the name of the Asyli.

Lusitania, in 1248, successfully conquered Brigitania. 10 years later, the Caesar of Lusitania decided to step down from the great game of Roman Unification, declaring that Lusitania would no longer pursue in reunifying Rome, and instead declared the empire of Ispania. Most of the Roman-Pretenders don't know what to do with this information; There's one less contender pursuing the title of Roman Augustus, that's good, but they refuse to bow before the true Roman Augustus (who ever you believe that is), which is bad. But this nonetheless inspired most of the rest of the Roman Pretenders to step down, leaving Southern Gaul, Vairoma, as the last claiming the title of Roman Augustus, although Croatia would pick up the title themselves soon enough.

In Italy, 1274, the Caliphate of Tunis invaded Southern Italy in hopes of capturing Rome. Coincidentally, just a month later, Croatia did the same. As the Tunisian army got closer to Rome, the Etalian Caesar (who still claimed to be Augustus) fled, leaving Rome to be defended by the Patriarch of Rome. The Caesar was subsequently captured by the Croatians, where he told them that the Caliphate was marching on Rome. Croatia executed the last Etalian Caesar before marching on Rome. The Battle of Rome was the largest and most important battle since the battle of the Rich River 50 years earlier. Tunis was forced to flee, but was able to keep most of southern Italy (Napolisia). Croatia didn't conquer Rome. Rather, they turned the Patriarch as the leader of Rome and a Croatian puppet. Croatia decided to take on the title of Caesar of Croatia and Roman Augustus.

The Etalian War also sparked an era of extreme religiousness among the Christians, culminating in the Crusade for Egypt in 1290, where Alexandria was liberated for the Patriarch of Alexandria, and Egypt, still trying to pick up the pieces from the war with Mongolia 80 years earlier, was left in pieces.

During this era saw wide conversion in the east: The Magars, the Ruthenians, the Petchenegs, the Estians, and the Novovilekians, only Littuia has yet to convert

1400

There's actually not to say in the last 100 years, except for one major thing: The Discovery of the New World by Ispane.

I will get to that, don't worry, but we have to go through the minor things first. Firstly, in 1312, Littoie and Estia together kicked out the Souedes and Scanes from the Baltic coast (with the exception of Osel) and in 1321, Lottoie, the last true European Pagan, converted to Christianity.

In 1332, the Empire of the Slavs, in the name of uniting all the Slavs, invaded Arria.

In 1345, The Mongol Empire saw a minor collapse of power as it went through internal struggles that only ended 20 years later. While the Ruthenians tried to conquer, it was suddenly and unpredictably shattered, while Kiev broke free and intends to unite Ruthenia under Kiev once again.

During the same time, the Ilkhanate saw complete collapse with the Turks breaking free, as with Iraq and Persia, and Armenia taking what was left.

Throughout most of this period, many of Christian states, especially Vairome and Marcoman Empire invaded the Holy land and formed the state of Two Patriarchies of the Holy Land.

In 1360, Scania successfully united with Dania, and in 1378, the Rugians did the same with the Ranians.

And of course, Ispane discovered the New World. Ispane sits at the end of Europe, with trade from the Holy Land and beyond being to far away and often being interfered with by the Caliphate of Tunis. Instead, Ispane searched to connect with the trade by going around Africa. They did find a route to India around Africa, but they still felt it was to far (although this time it wasn't interfered with by the Caliphate), and so they searched for another path by heading straight West, where they ended up in the New World.

Marcomannic and Slavic Empires

Marcomans

I apologize for the small words. Names will be repeated lower down in the description. Also, while the words are based on German, it's definitely not supposed to be exactly German

Ever since the Conquest of the Eastern Roman Empire by the Germans in the 500's, most notably by the Vandals, Goths, Skirs, and Marcomans. Their invasion led to the evolution and down right renaming of many of the important cities and regions. While most cities and regions have only one general name, some have 2 or even 3 names, depending on it's importance, most notably Constantinople. This map depicts some of the new names.
