  1. Eyes Turned Skywards

It just shows how much more efficient Propellant Depots are for getting beyond LEO. By using Depot's you are building infrastructure to continue exploration instead of just visiting. Unfortunately I suspect that we are going to sink $30 Billion into SLS and only then will people realize how...
  2. An extra Yorktown in 41 is worth 2 Essex in 43

I am a little confused. From what I understand France, UK and the US were still limited by the 2nd London Naval Treaty until September 1st 1939. Even if Japan and Italy refused the sign the treaty was still in force. Is this not correct?
  3. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

It isn't really high-G maneuvers that is the issue for a large plane like the B-36. It is the stress of take offs at or near maximum take-off weight, intense vibrations from the 6 Wasp-Major engines and a lightly built airframe to minimize weight and maximize altitude and range. The SAC...
  4. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

Even if you disagree with Stuart Slades politics or his writing's. He lays out fairly detailed history of what a B-36 development program would look if it was prioritized from the beginning and what the time frames would look like if the UK made peace with Germany in the middle of 1940. The...
  5. B-36 Raids in a Fortress North America/Luft '46 Scenario

Because of the current discussions on the B-36 I was doing some additional reading on the B-36 (http://www.amazon.com/Convair-B-36-Comprehensive-Americas-Schiffer/dp/0764305301/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434121397&sr=8-1&keywords=B-36 ) and I focused my reading on the Oral history from the...
  6. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

B-36 I was doing some researching on the B-36. I do agree that with a increase in priority we could see a B-36 prototype flying by 1945 with production models entering service by 1946 at least. You cannot compare peace time development time frames of the B-36 to what would have occurred in a...
  7. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

Who said the President is Taft for this scenario?
  8. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

Ditto you. How are you defining a wartime economy versus increase in military spending? With the surrender of the UK in the middle of 1940 the US is going to start shifting and mobilizing and that is going to see a increase in military spending than we would see historically. Is Defense...
  9. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

I disagree, with a surrender of Britain the US is clearly facing a clear danger from Nazi Germany and it will shift to wartime economy to start the build-up. Your statement of need a declared war for a wartime economy is a red herring and is not relevant. If Japan, Soviet Union and the US are...
  10. B-36 Raids in a Fortress North America/Luft '46 Scenario

Properly trained I don't see it as a issue. Loran stations started coming online historically by the end of 1942 historically to help navigation across the Atlantic.
  11. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

The US would just occupy Iceland if necessary.
  12. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

With Britain leaving the war sometime in 1940 this means the US switches sooner to a full wartime economy. This means by 1940 more equipment is available, just not capital ships. So more aircraft, destroyers, tanks everything is more off. You can probably pull the numbers for US production...
  13. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

If no war with Japan this leaves the primary focus of the US navy the Atlantic and Germany has no hope of winning the Battle of Atlantic. The Atlantic becomes essentially a US lake that can be used by US carries to strike against Nazi held Europe. The US can also move any material it wants to...
  14. How to get the Soviets first AROUND the Moon (not to the surface)

Apollo-8 entered lunar orbit. A free return trajectory around the Moon is not the same thing as dropping into Lunar Orbit and then getting back out to come home. You might very well has this scenario. Apollo-7 launches on schedule as a test of the CSM in Earth Orbit using a Saturn-1B...
  15. American strategic options vs a Nazi-dominated Europe?

Some assumptions in this scenario would be helpful. #1- When does Britain drop out of the War? #2- Does Japan declare war on the US?
  16. Space program questions

Your Saturn-V example, it could send about 100,000-lb to the Moon. What you are talking about is Delta-V budget. So for example the Delta-V required to go from LEO to Lunar Orbit is 4.04 km/sec. Go from Lunar Orbit to lunar surface is 1.87. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta-v_budget...
  17. Space program questions

You wouldn't want to put a fully fueled Saturn-V in orbit. What you would is maybe some type of Re-usable Two-Stage-To-Orbit vehicle that can lift XX amount of tonnage say 50-100 tons to LEO. You then build a space-ship in orbit but that vessel never enters a planet's atmosphere. You then have...
  18. Space program questions

Without getting into magic etc. If you just use normal mass fraction calculations that a re-usable launch vehicle will put about 1% of it's mass into Earth Orbit you would have a vehicle with a total mass of 100,000 metric tons. To achieve a ratio of 1.2G at lift off you would need 264 Million...
  19. A lunar base instead of the space station, 1984

True - I was also thinking about drinking water for usage on the surface. With water you can a lot more easily sustain life.
  20. A lunar base instead of the space station, 1984

If water could be harvested from the Lunar Polar regions. You not only significantly lower consumable's need on the lunar surface. This same water could supply a Propellant Depot at EML-2 with LOX/LH2. This propellant could then be used to supply missions beyond the Earth-Moon.
